WHAT/WHO IS THE FAR RIGHT?

Researcher

Fabumuyi Elizabeth Ilamosi.

The far-right ideology is characterized by its rejection of liberal democratic norms, emphasis on exclusivist and discriminatory views, and a belief in societal purity. This ideology has encompassed movements like fascism, Nazism, neo-fascism, white supremacy, and xenophobic groups.

At its core, the far-right worldview promotes organicism, viewing society as a unified entity threatened by diversity and modern pluralism. Far-right movements often target perceived threats to their idealized community, leading to anti-immigrant sentiment, welfare chauvinism, and in extreme cases, political violence.

The far-right appeals to those who seek a return to traditional social hierarchies and values. In practice, these movements vary significantly by region and historical context. For instance, in Western Europe, anti-immigration and anti-globalism are common themes, while in Eastern Europe, anti-communist rhetoric prevails.

Far-right politics have a dark history of oppression, violence, and genocide. Groups deemed inferior or threatening have been subjected to ethnic cleansing and forced assimilation. This ideology continues to influence political discourse, occasionally achieving electoral success and sparking debates about its place in democratic societies.

Scholars have identified key elements of the far-right ideology, including nationalism, xenophobia, law and order, and welfare chauvinism. The far-right often glorifies non-rational values like youth and the cult of the dead, appealing to archetypal figures and conspiracy theories.

In recent years, far-right groups have sought to build international alliances, with groups like Vox in Spain and the National Front in France gaining prominence. The far-right has also been linked to authoritarianism, anti-communism, and nativism, with claims of superiority justifying hierarchical social structures.
